Objective: 

- knowledge of the basic terms, technological principles
- knowledge of basic technological processes (inorganic technology, organic technology, biotechnology, nanotechnology)
- knowledge of scale shifting aspects, the economics of production

Assessment: 

lecture: written examination
laboratory: assessment of being prepared for classes, marking of a conducted task, report, laboratory supervision
seminar: continual assessment, individual presentation, project

Prerequisites: 

credited subjects: mathematics, physics, basic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry

Contents: 

Lecture and seminar

  1. Basic concepts, technological principles, unit operations and processes, technological schemes, balances

  2. Physico-chemical basis of technological processes

  3. Basic types of chemical reactors

  4. Review of more valid chemical technologies

  5. Chosen biotechnological processes

  6. Chemical industry resources, utilization of renewable resources

  7. Economics of technological process

  8. Legal regulations in chemical industry

Laboratory

  1. Construction materials, building chemistry (synthesis and analysis of plastics, mineral pigments)

  2. Agro-chemistry (mineral fertilizers, bio-glass)

  3. Consumer products, detergents and cosmetics (synthesis and assessment of technology effectiveness)

  4. Pharmaceutical chemistry (obtaining of chosen ointments and creams)

  5. Biomaterials (obtaining of biodegradable tissue scaffold, biopolymers)

  6. Nanotechnologies (synthesis of hybrid materials)

 

Assumed results of education upon receiving a credit for a module, a student knows/can/is able to:

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knows basic definitions, technological principles, unit operations and processes

  • Knows the rudiments of industrial chemistry

  • Knows examples of inorganic and organic synthesis technologies, metals, polymers, material processing, environmentally friendly technologies

  • Knows the raw materials used in chemical industry

  • Knows the methods of assessment and recycling of materials

SKILLS

  • Is able to prepare a simplified technological project of a chemical process

  • Is able to prepare mass and heat balance for a simple technological process

  • Complies with safety regulations in a laboratory

  • Is in possession of practical skills within the technology on a laboratory scale

  • Analyzes the results of laboratory experiments

  • Applies IT techniques for processing and management of experimental data

  • Elaborates reports on laboratory examinations

  • Searches for information in specialist literature in both Polish and English individually

OTHER COMPETENCES

  • Complies with the safety regulations in a laboratory

  • Is aware of the risks connected with the application of appropriate chemicals technologies

  • Abides by the principles of professional ethics

  • Is able to work in a team
